Technology News: One of the biggest social media platforms Instagram brings new tests for users to verify their age via an original ID or video selfie, the concern is growing for the kids who are using fake dates of birth to create profiles on social media platforms.
Furthermore, if someone tries to edit their date of birth on Instagram from under the age of 18, in India, the company will now require them to verify their age using any of the options, upload ID cards or record a video selfie.
The company further said that they are testing this feature so they can make sure teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group. Well, Instagram tested this feature in June 2022 in the USA and now expanding to India and Brazil. Additionally, the company is planning to expand the test further in UK and EU this year.
Moreover, they are removing the social vouching option from Instagram, this option allows the users to ask their mutual followers to confirm their age. Now, those who are part of the test can choose to upload a video selfie to verify their age in India.
If you choose this option, there will be an instruction on your page to guide you. After taking the video selfie, they share the image with Yoti. Yoti is the technology that estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that with Instagram. Meanwhile, Yoti is a company that verifies age. After this step, Meta and Yoti both delete the image,
However, the company requires people to be at least 13 years old to sign up for Instagram. According to reports from UK media, Ofcom said that more than 1/3rd of children 8-17 years of age are using Instagram by putting the fake date of birth.
